The Basque Maritime Forum (FMV) together with the Basque Mobility and Logistics Cluster (MLC-ITS Euskadi) has carried out the project "New link for the logistics of SMEs", a technical feasibility study that has assessed the need to generate a barge that enables the transport of large volume parts from the Ria de Bilbao to the outer harbor.

This study will allow to know the possibility of adding a sustainable and innovative element through the integration of digital technologies and intelligent transport systems (ITS) to the logistics chain serving SMEs in the area, enabling industrial development and attracting investment and large-scale projects.

The study will identify business and intelligence solutions that will enable the development of a sustainable, efficient, connected and innovatively managed means of transportation shared among several companies, which will process and make use of the information obtained in order to optimize the planning, construction and distribution processes of the SMEs. In addition, it will study the economic and social impact that this type of logistics solution would have for the entire value chain and the technical specifications that would allow its development. 

The Mobility and Logistics Cluster is studying alternative logistics applications for the vehicle, especially in companies located on the banks of the Ria of Bilbao to see if there is any demand for river transport for the transport of parcels, goods, waste between the two banks or as an intermodal interchange.
